Smyer Elementary News
Sorting Day
Elementary Parents,
It was great first week of school. Teachers and students have been working hard to learn routines and procedures. This week we will be diving deep into learning!

Our House Sorting Day was a success! Students are now working for points for their Houses. At the end of the semester the House with the most points will be going on a special field trip (this will take the place of PRIDE TRIPS for elementary).

Please be mindful of our school's dress code. I know it is dreadfully hot outside, but some of our student's shorts are too short for school. Shorts should be around a 6 inches above the knee (dollar bill) and bike shorts need to have a shirt that covers the bottom.

A note from Mrs. Langill:
Starting next week Mrs. Langill and Pepper will be visiting classrooms. Students will get the opportunity to learn about what a school Counselor role is and the expectations of having a therapy dog on campus. Pepper has enjoyed getting to greet and meet all the students throughout the building and can't wait to share her purpose as a Therapy Dog.

Strive For Five
Attendance Matters
This school year we are going to focus on student attendance. Some say it takes 10,000 hours of quality practice in somthing (sports, music, reading, math) to become an expert in it. When a student misses school they are losing the ground to become the best they can be.

If a student misses 10 days in school year = 4,930 minutes/82 hours of instruction lost

If a student misses 10 days a year every year during their elementary years, they will have missed: 34,510 minutes/575hours of instruction. WOW!

We want our kids to be set up success and not struggling to make up the exposure they lost from being absent! This year we are going to have a STRIVE for FIVE goal--no more than five absences for the school year.
