Smyer Elementary News
1st Grade
Elementary Parents,
We had a great first full week of school. Teachers and students haved dived right into their routines and learning! This week we will do our first round of MAP testing for K-6th grades. MAP testing for the first round tells teachers where students are at academically in Reading, Math, and Science (2nd-6th). Teachers use this information to inform enrichment/intervention times as well as small groups. Students will take the second round of MAP testing in December to see their growth.

On Friday, we will have our first House Family day with the students. They will divide into their Houses and we will have a friendly House competition Olympic style!

Introducing Lunch Bunch groups with Mrs. Langill
As part of the counseling program at Smyer Elementary I am excited to
introduce Lunch Bunch groups. A Lunch Bunch group is designed to
support students through various phases and changes during their
elementary years. During these groups we will work on ways to develop
communication skills and coping strategies to be successful within the
school environment. Topics discussed may include friendship, self
awareness, grief, conflict resolution, and social emotional learning.
Lunch Bunch groups will meet during a scheduled lunch time once a
week for approximately 20-30 minutes for 6-8 weeks. Be looking for
invites throughout the year where your child can participate in being a
part of a lunch bunch group.

Strive For Five
Attendance Matters
This school year we are going to focus on student attendance. Some say it takes 10,000 hours of quality practice in somthing (sports, music, reading, math) to become an expert in it. When a student misses school they are losing the ground to become the best they can be.

If a student misses 10 days in school year = 4,930 minutes/82 hours of instruction lost

If a student misses 10 days a year every year during their elementary years, they will have missed: 34,510 minutes/575hours of instruction. WOW!

We want our kids to be set up success and not struggling to make up the exposure they lost from being absent! This year we are going to have a STRIVE for FIVE goal--no more than five absences for the school year.
