1st Grade
Elementary Parents,
It was an awesome week down in Elementary. We completed our beginning of the year MAP testing, and our kids are sitting at a perfect spot for the beginning of the year. We cannot wait to watch them grow!

This week we celebrated our August Students' of the Month. Students for the month of August are:

PK-Elizabeth
K-Timber and Izabella
1st-Celia and Ransom
2nd-Miranda and Kolbie
3rd- Grant and Adali
4th-Zane and Casen
5th-Selena and Tristan
6th- Kaydence and Eder

We had a fun time on Friday for our first dance party with the cheerleaders and football boys in the cafeteria. The kids enjoyed the send-off pep rally, too! Friday was also a time for our students to get together with their house and spend some times playing teambuilding games and then we had fun cheering on our classmates in some Olympic events.

Smyer Secondary News

Secondary Familes,
Secondary will MAP test (NWEA) on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will run the MAP testing Bell Schedule.

Why MAP?
Results from MAP tests are typically available to teachers, schools, and districts with 48 hours of when the student completes the test. Whereas, results of State assessments are typically not available for a minimum of three months. MAP allows schools to assess students for growth during the school year and between school years. MAP data allows schools to differentiate and adjust instruction forindividuals students, groups of students, or entire classes based on results of the assessment. The results can be used by students,
parents, teachers, grade levels, subject areas, schools, and the school district for a variety of purposes.

For our first full-distance meet, the Smyer Cats traveled to Lubbock Roosevelt to run in the cotton fields! This is a fun route to run, and the Cats showed up for the challenge!
We’re proud of all our runners, and know it’s only getting better from the beginning of the year.

Strive For Five
Attendance Matters
This school year we are going to focus on student attendance. Some say it takes 10,000 hours of quality practice in somthing (sports, music, reading, math) to become an expert in it. When a student misses school they are losing the ground to become the best they can be.

If a student misses 10 days in school year = 4,930 minutes/82 hours of instruction lost

If a student misses 10 days a year every year during their elementary years, they will have missed: 34,510 minutes/575hours of instruction. WOW!

We want our kids to be set up success and not struggling to make up the exposure they lost from being absent! This year we are going to have a STRIVE for FIVE goal--no more than five absences for the school year.
